EC Announces Dates for Registration of new Voters, Replacements: All you Need to Know
Mrs. Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, revealed during a press conference in Accra on Thursday that the EC would begin registering new voters from September 12, 2023 to October 2, 2023 at its 268 District Offices.
This is to pave the way for citizens who have attained the ages of 18 years and above to register in order to participate in the District Level Elections. The EC has set Tuesday, December 19, 2023 for the 2023 District Level Elections.
Members who were elected in 2019 and whose terms end in December of current year will be replaced by newly elected members.
The polls would be held in all 6,272 electoral zones, with the exception of Nkoranza North and Nzoranka South in the Bono East Region, according to the EC. The EC stated that it is aiming for a 60% voter turnout in this year's DLE and urged the media to help raise awareness and educate the people about the importance of the exercise.
“This is because the district level elections were not held in 2019 for the said districts due to security reasons but was postponed and conducted in April 2021. As such, the elections would not be held in both regions until 2025”, she explained.
The Chairperson also took use of the opportunity to reassure Ghanaians that the next voter registration drive would not be the only one before the 2024 General Election. She also stated that missing voter ID cards could be replaced at all District Registration centres for GHC10.00.
Speaking on the same issue, Mr. Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman of the EC in Charge of Operations assured that “there will be stakeholder engagements with the civil society, security agencies, faith based organizations and a massive awareness in the media and public announcements by district electoral officers.”
