Ghanaian Youth React to Tax on Bet Winnings

Young men in Ghana have taken to social media to express share their views on the 10% withholding tax imposed on bet winnings. 



Implementation of 10% Withholding Tax on the gross winnings from all Betting, Gaming, Lotto and other Games of Chance following the passage of the Income Tax (Amendment) (No. 2) Act, 2023 (Act 1094) which came into effect on 15th August, 2023 saw Ghanaian Youth express their anger against the Nana Addo-Bawumia-led government for their disregard to the suffering of jobless youth.

Meanwhile,any of these social media users have expressed their readiness to vote for any candidate who will assure them that the tax on bet winnings will be scrapped once they win power after the 2024 elections. 

Government officials have consistently described the youth who engaged in betting as lazy, arguing that the tax on bet winnings is meant to discourage betting.

Meanwhile, the youth have cited the increasing rate of unemployment and economic hardship as the main driver of betting.
