How Ghanaian Passport Officials are Manipulating Online Application System

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, claims that some passport office employees are undermining the online passport application process in order to extort money from applicants.

She claimed that some public officials at the passport offices were making it impossible for the Ministry to maintain sanity in the passport acquisition process. She claimed that certain passport office employees collude with intermediaries (goro boys) to collect money from passport applicants.

The Minister, who was speaking during a visit to the Passport Office on Monday, voiced his displeasure that politicians are frequently blamed for corruption although such acts are primarily planned by civil officials.

Ms. Ayorkor Botchwey stated that an inquiry into the behavior of some passport office employees in Accra is ongoing, and that some names have already been mentioned. She further went stated that anytime there is corruption in the passport application process, lawmakers and the Ministry are held accountable.
